Yes, we know, we're a smartphone/tablet-centric website, but the 3DS gives us an opportunity to get a sneak peek into the very near future of glasses-free 3D gaming on a mobile display. Sprint will be releasing the HTC EVO 3D this summer and AT&T will be unleashing the LG Thrill 4G (Optimus 3D) in the "coming months." At least one of those devices (maybe both) houses a display made by Sharp, the manufacturer responsible for the 3D screen on the Nintendo 3DS. Naturally, Sharp's Galapagos 3D phone uses their in-house technology as well. We've been saying from the very beginning that 3D will be huge on smartphones, especially in the gaming department. Now that speculation has turned to reality with multiple 3D phones coming soon, it's time to take the previously dubbed "gimmick" seriously. The 3DS gives us an opportunity to see how well 3D gaming performs on a small mobile display. It also affords us the chance to see if consumers actually dig the extra dimension, even with the limitation of poor viewing angles, after an extended period of time. Here we simply show you the goods inside the box, which includes a sweet charging dock, and then take you on a tour of the hardware. In a followup video, we'll talk about our lengthy experiences with a few 3D games and how we think it will translate to the smartphone world. First impressions ...

As striking as it is, the illusion of depth now routinely offered by 3-D movies is a paltry facsimile of a true three-dimensional visual experience. In the real world, as you move around an object, your perspective on it changes. But in a movie theater showing a 3-D movie, everyone in the audience has the same, fixed perspective — and has to wear cumbersome glasses, to boot. Despite impressive recent advances, holographic television, which would present images that vary with varying perspectives, probably remains some distance in the future. But in a new paper featured as a research highlight at this summer's Siggraph computer-graphics conference, the MIT Media Lab's Camera Culture group offers a new approach to multiple-perspective, glasses-free 3-D that could prove much more practical in the short term. Instead of the complex hardware required to produce holograms, the Media Lab system uses several layers of liquid-crystal displays (LCDs), the technology currently found in most flat-panel TVs. To produce a convincing 3-D illusion, the displays would need to refresh at a rate of about 360 times a second, or 360 hertz. Such displays may not be far off: LCD TVs that boast 240-hertz refresh rates have already appeared on the market, just a few years after 120-hertz TVs made their debut. It wouldn't be CES without Stream TV showing off more interesting glasses-free 3D technology and then launching, um, nothing into the wide market. Hopefully that won't happen this time, now that the company has paired with OEM panel-makers Pegatron and Hisense, and is now showing off its technology in UltraHD 4k. It has a proprietary system for encoding 2D and 3D video using occlusion, which is delivered to standard panels that have been retrofitted with its optical glass sandwich to bring the spec-less 3D illusion to viewers. This year, it added all-new algorithms that can handle native UHDTV content or up-res HD to 4k, both in non-realtime for quality, or realtime to convert standard 2D TV to 3D on-the-fly.
